Brute-Force SSH Attacks Increase by Order of Magnitude
Wednesday, May 21, 2008
Just last weekend, according to the Internet Storm Center (a network-monitoring team supported by The SANS Institute), a number of network administrators noted an order-of-magnitude increase in the number of attempts to guess the usernames and passwords of systems running the SSH (Secure Shell) network protocol. System administrators at universities and some companies have reported login attempts coming from hundreds and thousands of Internet addresses over the past week, a stark increase from the handful of attacks they saw previously. Considering the sharp spike in attacks, readers may wish to take steps to protect their systems. See this SecurityFocus article for more information.
