Cyberbullying Against the Law?
Wednesday, August 20, 2008
Federal prosecutors who are trying a Missouri woman charged with using a false MySpace.com identity to cause a 13-year-old girl to commit suicide are arguing that the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act is relevant to the case against Lori Drew. The statute was originally written to criminalize Internet hackers who illegally access accounts, but Drew's creation of a false identity on MySpace.com — and use of the identity to harass her young neighbor with cruel messages — may place her at similar legal risk. Cyberbullying (or trolling) is a relatively new phenomenon, but the law seems to be playing catch-up fast. More details on this fascinating topic are available at BradentonHerald.com.
