Don't Ask, Don't Tell
No good deed, as they say, goes unpunished. Recently, three Massachusetts Institute of Technology students were blocked by a federal judge from delivering a paper at the DEFCON 16 security conference that outlines how to hack the MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority) — better known as "the T" — for free rides. The students insist that they offered to show MBTA officials how to fix the problem the conference. "We made first contact," they told The Boston Globe. "We wanted to let them know some ideas we had on how they could fix that system ... that was affirmed in a Monday meeting. Then Friday, we find out there's a federal lawsuit against us." Ironically, court documents that argued for suppression of the DEFCON 16 presentation pretty much put the hack on the street. See Dark Reading's article for more information.
