Inside Job
San Francisco's online network officials have just learned a primal lesson: Never piss off your system administrator. Terry Childs, a disgruntled system administrator, allegedly locked all municipal employees out of the city's FiberWAN network. Childs, who faces four charges of computer tampering, earned almost $150,000 in the past year for being part of the system's on-call support team. Bail was set at $5 million — higher than that of most suspected murderers — after prosecutors argued that Childs could cause more harm to the network. This comes at no surprise: Insiders have always posed an acute threat to information networks. For the full story, check SecurityFocus.
Editor's note: This story is still developing, with Childs recently turning over passwords to Mayor Gavin Newsom.
